Enrique Zuazua honored with a prestigious speaker invitation to deliver a Special Section Lecture on Control Theory at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2026 (ICM 2026) to be held in Philadelphia, USA.
This invitation from the International Mathematical Union (IMU) is considered one of the highest accolades in the field of mathematics that carry very high prestige. Speakers are selected with extreme diligence to highlight leading breakthroughs across all the field of mathematics. As Nature senior reporter Davide Castelvecchi noted in 2015, being invited to speak at the congress is “the equivalent, in this community, of an induction to a hall of fame.”
This marks the second such distinction for Professor Zuazua, who previously delivered a sectional lecture at the ICM 2006 in Madrid. This repeated recognition is particularly notable for a Spanish mathematician and underscores his status as a leading global figure in applied mathematics, celebrated for his sustained and influential contributions.
Enrique Zuazua, holds the Chair for Dynamics, Control, Machine Learning and Numerics – Alexander von Humboldt Professorship (FAU DCN-AvH) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in Germany, the Chair of Computational Mathematics (DeustoCCM) at Deusto University in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain and a Strategic Chair at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM).
His groundbreaking research has been recognized with remarkable achievement of securing three European Research Council Advanced Grants (ERCAdG): NUMERIWAVES (2010), DyCon (2016) and CoDeFel (2024).
The first ICM held in Zurich in 1897 on proposal of German mathematicians Felix Klein and Georg Cantor, and nowadays ICM is convening held every four years to showcase the most important trends at the world’s largest and most significant global conference in the field of mathematics.
