Course Geometric Beam Theory, though Geometric and Variational Foundations of Continuum Mechanics and Beam Theory
On October 20th. starts the course on “Geometric Beam Theory, though Geometric and Variational Foundations of Continuum Mechanics and Beam Theory” organized by the Institute of Applied Dynamics (LTD / Lehrstuhl für Technische Dynamik) at the Faculty of Engineering, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg.
This course is intended for students at a Master’s level in Mathematics and Physics who have some interest in differential geometry and continuum mechanics.
WHEN?

The lectures will take place online via Zoom in livestream (link available soon)
Lectures with exercise sessions, 4 SWS, ECTS-Credits: 5, Auditors welcomed
Description
In this course we aim to provide a theoretical overview of beam theory in the context of continuum mechanics and Lagrangian mechanics and its numerical treatment with an emphasis on geometry. We will introduce the concept of Lie group and their role in the description of the geometrically exact beam model used for large deformations.
Contents
- Vector spaces and smooth manifolds
- Continuum and Lagrangian mechanics
- Linear beam theory
- Nonlinear beam theory
- Finite rotations and Lie groups
- Geometrically exact beam
Prerequisites
Knowledge of dynamics and statics, elastostatics, linear algebra, differential equations.
Recommendations
-
- Dynamik starrer Körper [DSK]
- Statik und Festigkeitslehre [SuF]
- Statik, Elastostatik und Festigkeitslehre [SEF]
