Abstract. In this talk, I will focus on the problem of exponential stability for linear PDEs. Two main strategies are classically adopted to tackle this problem: energy estimates and semigroup techniques. Taking the weakly damped wave equation (WDWE) as emblematic example, I will introduce both approaches, and discuss the mutual relation between the two. In particular, I will define the notion of SDG (spectrum determined growth) condition, and show how this can be proved for the WDWE by means of energy estimates
