Title: Numerical algorithms as a tool that binds science disciplines with particular emphasis on matrix algorithms

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Hab. Eng. Jerzy Respondek
Affiliation: Department of Applied Informatics, Silesian University of Technology (Poland)

Abstract. The talk presents the general trend of the growing importance of mathematics, physics and computer science methods in the simulation of technical and natural phenomena using specific examples.

Then, an overview of the methods of synthesizing the so-called fast matrix multiplication algorithms with the most-known examples. It was discussed how to use their effectiveness in other problems, both matrix and other types, in particular mathematical control and IT problems. A further increase in the efficiency of matrix algorithms can be obtained through the synthesis of specialized algorithms for special matrices with a specific form. Therefore, a few selected examples show the methods of synthesis, properties of algorithms operating on special (often called also as ‘structured’) matrices and their applications.

A special part of the talk will be devoted to the overview of the Author’s algorithms for structures matrices, just to the Author’s applications of those – special matrices – results in the mathematical control.
